Vancouver-based artist Kirsten Hatfield creates paintings intuitively without using sketches or source imagery. Her paintings are a combination of memory and dream imagery informed largely by the landscape of her childhood; both the physical landscape of Vancouver Island where she grew up, and the cultural landscape of growing up a digital native. Using brushwork, texture, and colour her work aims to evoke the same visceral reaction of the epic and the sublime that are evident in the Romanticist landscapes, historical Canadian landscape painting, and surrealist landscapes.
Kirsten has exhibited in both Vancouver and various cities on Vancouver Island since 2007. She recently exhibited with Ayden Gallery in Vancouver.
Kirsten graduated with a BFA at Emily Carr University, Canada in 2014. She currently lives and works in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
