Alice Yang / Hye Ryung Yang
Seoul, South Korea
Alice (Hye Ryung) Yang (b. 1986) is a visual artist based in Seoul, South Korea. Yang graduated with an MFA from Konkuk University, Seoul in 2014 and with a BFA in Contemporary Fine Arts from the same university in 2009.
Her canvases show actual sites she experienced privately, but Yang makes them transit into non-existent places through a reformulation following the perception of her memories. Yang transfers images from photographs onto her canvases by using fragmentation, reconstruction and spatial illusions. Her paintings thus explore the boundary between existence and non-existence, the simultaneity of absence and presence, through real and virtual objects.
Yang has exhibited her work at various galleries, including solo exhibitions at Gallery Doll, Seoul in 2014 and Gallery Dos, Seoul in 2011. Yang’s paintings can found in the permanent collection of SOMA Museum of Art and the Songwon Art Centre, as well as in numerous private collections.
